Our smoking cessation intervention is comprised of 3 different components:
- Counseling Each participant will receive counseling either online or over the phone from a personal Quit Coach through the Texas Tobacco Quitline. These Quit Coaches will help guide and motivate participants through their attempt to quit smoking by providing therapeutic support as well as information about the nicotine patch and how to tailor its use to each individual.
- Nicotine Replacement Therapy All participants will be provided up to 8 weeks-worth of NicoDerm CQ nicotine patches for optional use.
- Exercise This part of the study’s smoking cessation therapy is what makes our intervention unique from traditional therapies. Each participant will undergo a 15-week exercise program at the YMCA of Austin in which they will be randomly assigned to either a high-intensity exercise condition or low-intensity condition. Participants will attend 3 weekly sessions at the YMCA, one of which will be guided by a personal trainer that will help monitor your progress throughout the course of the study.
- Compensation for participation in our study up to $250 by the study’s completion
